I'm New Here begins with 'On Coming From A Broken Home (Part 1)', a spoken word poem, backed with a sample from Kanye West's 'Flashing Lights' from the rapper's album, Graduation. The track establishes the tone of Gil Scott-Heron's return to recording: raw, self-critical, unashamedly confessional.

Despite Scott-Heron's reputation for militant subject matter, in many of his records his passion and warmth is paramount and tracks such as 'Your Daddy Loves You' and 'A Very Precious Time' balanced the anger of 'South Carolina (Barnwell)' and 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised'. The touching memories of his grandmother - 'I loved her from the very marrow of my bones' - in 'On Coming From A Broken Home' give evidence on the emotional variety in the artist's work.

Me And The Devil

Unlike the majority of his albums, I'm New Here does not predominantly feature Scott-Heron's own writing. Producer Richard Russell and Scott-Heron have however chosen songs which are so closely related to the artist's history and personality that they still seem autobiographical.
